Interviewing Tips

Preparation

Is your resume current? Does it emphasize your achievements as well as the tasks you have performed?

Have you researched the company? What does it buy, sell, distribute, stand for? What differentiates it from its competitors? Who are you meeting at the company, and what is that person's role?

Have you "rehearsed" for your interview -- anticipated questions likely to be asked, and formulated responses? How will you "package" your strengths? Take a personal inventory -- why would someone want you on their team? What size company and department are you considering?

Do you know how to get to your interview, where you will park, and where you will go when you get there?

Presentation

Is your grooming, hygiene and professional dress consistent with the image you would like to present?

Have you planned to arrive not more or less than 10 minutes early?

Do you "know your lines?" (See "Preparation.")

Are you aware of your posture, eye contact and other body language?

Emphasize the contribution you will make -- with confidence.

Illustration

Expect to provide specific examples from your work history that will illustrate your technical ability and/or personal strengths as they relate to this position.

Inquiry

What questions will you ask your interviewer about the position, the company and/or the long-term prospects with this firm that will confirm your interest?

Ask about the day-to-day responsibilities you will be handling as well as the supervisor's expectations from his/her staff members.

Be prepared to ask, "What is the next step?" or "Where do we go from here?" and/or "Is there anything in my background that would prevent me from being a contender for this position?" to assess the interviewer's interest in you.
